About Central Pier

Central Pier was opened in 1868 and was not popular as people said it was too far to town. There was a steamer service called Queen of the North to Southport with a band for dancing on the return trip and was called the peoples pier.

A pavilion was built on the end where their was shows for a number of years but retained its amusements covering its deck. It had a total length of 1518 feet - this included 400 feet of wooden jetty. The cost to build was £10,000.

In February 1965, it was damaged by a gale and shortened by 100 feet. The Dixieland palace at the front was built in 1968, burned out in 1975 and was rebuilt and is still in use today.
